Irene Urmeneta Koszycka (IUK ceramics) is a Chicago-based ceramicist with roots in the Philippines, New England, and NYC. She is also a practicing architect.

A whole world in your hands.

When I started doing pottery in early 2019, I immediately fell in love with the medium: the intimacy, the physicality, the mess. This very tactile process quickly taught me that the journey from the wheel to the fire is a tenuous one. It has given an almost human dimension and dignity to these small objects. Holding a handmade pot is like holding an entire life, a whole world (only a bit of an exaggeration).

I initially made this site because I wanted to record my works-in-progress and share my ever deepening relationship with the wheel - yes, but the ultimate purpose is to find community in clay. Iā€™m eternally grateful for the Hyde Park Art Center a walk away, and for the studio space I share with my husband.

Thank you for visiting and please reach out. I would love to hear from you.
